Colijn Strydom’s Flower Intervention involved replacing billboard advertising space with photos of flowers. The domestic and poetic nature of the flowers contrast starkly with the public nature of the environment. These billboards are are situated in Cape Town’s CBD, Southern Suburbs and Atlantic Seaboard and are owned by Tractor Outdoor.
The billboards are digital, allowing Strydom to use multiple images. The same bouquet of flowers was photographed multiple times during the course of a day and displayed in the same sequence on the billboards. In this way the changing light in the images acts as a hand of clock showing the gentle passing of a private day.
